First Responders - The public has a very narrow view of what you do and why you do it.

First Responders

Major traumas - life changing experiences.

The shooting, horrible auto crash, or child death that you were involved with got the headlines, brought out the TV cameras. But time passes and peoples’ lives go on, but not for you and your family.

Secondary trauma - prolonged and unresolved stress

Secondary traumas are equally devastating, but less acknowledged. It is caused by prolonged, unrelenting and unresolved stress that you stuff back inside, month after month, year after year. Unresolved, it can contribute to heart disease, fatal heart attacks, diabetes and other disabilities. It can alter your personality and cloud your judgments.

This type of stress can also compromise the immune system and cause you to be more susceptible to everyday illnesses. Self-medicating with booze or prescription drugs masks underlying problems and leads to more serious problems in the long run.

One of the consequences of managing other peoples crisis’s is that your own denial of emotions can become so ingrained that you may not experience family and personal relationships emotionally or appropriately.

Denial of stress can sneak up on you with physical symptoms or actual disease, or behaviors that put barriers between you and your loved ones.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy:

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a process that helps people change by constructing solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Together we identify elements of the solution, which are usually already present in your life. You learn to build on these elements, which form the basis for ongoing change. Rather than searching for the causes of the problem, the focus is on defining the changes and making them a reality.

Eclectic Therapy:

Eclectic therapy is a style of therapy that uses techniques drawn from several different schools of thought. The eclectic approach can be flexible and adaptive and avoid forcing treatment into one size fits all limitations. It is an approach to helping people by tailoring therapy to the needs of the individual.
